Step by step

The Project

The Mama Heidi Health Center is being built in a poorer neighbourhood of Tamale, the capital of Ghana's Northern Region. The compound includes several buildings, realised in three phases.

Income for the project

The Hut & Family Apartments

  • Private rental hut: A traditionally styled accommodation rented to individual tourists. All income goes directly to the project.
  • 3 family apartments: Residential units for local families, generating ongoing income for operations.
  • Hut guests are asked to bring consumables: disposable gloves, syringes, face masks and similar medical supplies.

The core goal

The Health Center

  • 2 apartments for a doctor and a nurse — ensuring permanent medical staff on site.
  • 3 small shops rented to local entrepreneurs — generating additional income and economic activity.
  • Healthcare: vaccinations, basic medical care, hygiene products, menstrual hygiene, glasses, workshops on hygiene and sexual health.
  • Empowerment of young women through small businesses: sewing projects (menstrual pads) and glass bead jewellery for sale.

Long-term sustainability

Phase 3: Independence & Community

The long-term goal is a center run and funded by the community itself. Phase 3 involves expanding empowerment programmes, integrating local health workers, and building permanent care structures — independent of external support.

Where we build

Tamale, Northern Region

Tamale is Ghana's fourth-largest city and the capital of the Northern Region. The population is predominantly Muslim, with a Christian minority — the MHHC is open to all, regardless of religion or origin.

The project is located in a poorer neighbourhood, where access to basic medical care is especially limited.
